Postal Inspectors are recruited for taking responsibility of one or two postal divisions together in any district, by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) through Combined Graduate Level (CGL) examination. The post is set up for taking all postal divisions across the country. The post is not quite so lucrative and does not involve exciting field works to be done with challenges.

The posting of postal inspectors is made according to the vacancies in any particular postal division. They are responsible for taking care of 60 to 70 post offices within their division/subdivision. The postal inspector is assisted by generally two Mail Overseers in his division and he remains the appointing authority of conducting interviews of candidates for Gramin Dak Sevak posts. There used to be at least two divisions in a district and thus there would be a requirement for at least two Postal Inspector posts in any district.
