Postal Inspectors are recruited for taking responsibility of one or two postal divisions together in any district, by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) through Combined Graduate Level (CGL) examination. The post is set up for taking all postal divisions across the country. The post is not quite so lucrative and does not involve exciting field works to be done with challenges.
The posting of postal inspectors is made according to the vacancies in any particular postal division. They are responsible for taking care of 60 to 70 post offices within their division/subdivision. The postal inspector is assisted by generally two Mail Overseers in his division and he remains the appointing authority of conducting interviews of candidates for Gramin Dak Sevak posts. There used to be at least two divisions in a district and thus there would be a requirement for at least two Postal Inspector posts in any district.
What
is India Post?
The Department
of Posts in India is best known as Indian Post. It is a
government-operated postal system in India which generally regarded as ‘the
post office”. The department of posts has over 1.5 lakh post offices around the
country. The network of post offices around the country has grown immensely
after the independence of India and consequently the demand for people working
at the department has risen. The Indian Post is the largest and most widely
distributed postal system in the world, because of its far-flung reach and
presence in the remotest areas of the country. Along with postal services the
Indian Post is associated with giving services such as small banking and
financial services to its potential customers. The Indian Post is divided into
22 postal circles, which are further divided into regions, divisions and
subdivisions. The subdivisions and divisions are headed by Postal Inspectors.
Job
Profile of Postal Inspector
The Postal
Inspector post is a Group-B Non-Gazetted post which is among
the lowest preferred job profiles among the SSC CGL candidates, who opt for the
examination. The dislike for the post is caused due to its intense workload
without any social recognition status or credits in return. The job is often
termed as a field job, but lacks the slightest of excitement in field jobs. It
can be more termed as a clerical job and desk bound hours can make office hours
really tiring. The postal inspectors have to shuffle through files, papers and
documents for the entire day and keep track of almost 60- 70 post offices under
their division. The Postal Inspectors also have the responsibility to canvass
people. so that, they can buy Postal Life Insurance from the post office. They
also have to make people understand quite a few schemes launched by the
government and sell them to collect funds for the postal department. The postal
inspectors have recently been notified by the Department of Posts that they
need to increase the growth of each circle by at least 20 percent, which means
there is an additional pressure on the postal inspectors in the post offices.
Pay
scale and Salary
Like any other
Grade B officer the Inspector of Posts gets paid in the pay band II (Rs. 9300-
34800) with Grade Pay of Rs. 4200/-. They are provided
with separate monthly allowances of Rs. 750/- for telephone bills and internet
charges. They are also provided with a laptop and are allowed to reimburse
their travelling expenses from the department.
Promotion
Policy of Postal Inspector
The very first
promotion which the postal inspectors can expect is Assistant Superintendents
in postal sub division, divisional/regional/circle offices or in the Postal
Directorate in New Delhi. This could take a roughly around 5 years of work as
Postal Inspector in any particular division. The candidates can further rise to
the level of Superintendents in Postal/RMS Divisions and Assistant Directors in
regional/circle offices. Senior Superintendents and Director of the Postal
Services posts are achievable at the near end of their career depending on
their skills and performance over time.
