  • Non-Assessment Section
In the Assessment Section, you will be primarily handling all the desk job details which comes the title of Income Tax Inspector. Your job would be the assessment of Income Tax which people or a company is liable to pay. Handling Refund Claims and TDS related queries also fall under your job profile.

In the Non-Assessment Section, you will be subjected to field work. You will get to be a part of the rapid response team which conducts raids. Your desk work will be limited to gathering intel and proper evidence against possible defaulters. This job profile might sounds interesting but can be risky at times.

Income Tax Inspector - Salary, Pay Scale and Allowances:

The salary breakdown of an Income Tax Inspector is as follows.
  • Pay Scale: Rs. 9,300 – 34,800/-
  • Grade Pay: Rs. 4,600/-
  • Initial Pay: Rs. 9,300/-
  • Total Pay: Rs. 13,900/-

You can expect a stable career growth once you are placed under Income Tax Department.
The career progression can be seen in the following way.
  1. Income Tax Officer (ITO), a group B Gazetted post, in around 4-6 years
  2. The Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax (A.C.I.T.) in around 10-12 years
  3. Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax (D.C.I.T.)
  4. Joint Commissioner of Income Tax (J.C.I.T.)
  5. Additional Commissioner of Income Tax (A.D.C.I.T.)

Transfer: There are two types of transfer available in the dept.
  1. Annual General Transfer
  2. Inter Charge Transfer
Transfer is possible but it’s not too certain or easy thing to happen. There are number of points which must be in your favour like
  1. There must be vacancies in the zone you want to get transferred to.
  2. Either you must have valid grounds for applying for ICT cited in CBDT circular or else 3 years of service.
  3. Administration of both the zones must be cooperative and liberal.
Work Timings: Work in the hours defined by the department and go home on the right time. Generally office timing for Government employees is 9:00 am–5:00 pm. But in some special cases like of an impending raid or search, you may have to work for longer and uncertain durations.
