CAG Divisional accountant is a financial advisor to the government engineers. You will be the sole authority to pass the bills of divisions. Divisional accountant in CAG i.e. “An Autonomous institution established under the constitution of India,” is a central government employee who can work in state owned office and central government offices.

Job Profile & responsibilities

Divisional accountant is the person, who do accountancy for various government departments and checks the expenses & all the transactions occurred on particular project. After your verification and approval, contractors will get the amount. It is the only job that truly offers you an officer profile because there is no sub-ordination with the UPSC officer as other departments do have. You do not have to take orders or guidelines from an IAS officer. It is an independent work profile where you have to take all major financial decisions alone.
Apart from the above fact, you will obviously get a separate cabin, peon and account assistants to get the work done. You will receive respect from the assistant engineers of PWD, Irrigation as you have much authority comparable to them. Working knowledge and man management is the key skill to excel and sustain in this job profile. Respect in the office depends upon your knowledge and expertise. Mostly experience holders choose this profile as they are well aware of the real situations arouse in the office.

The only cons associated with this job are that you have to do the same kind of work throughout the whole service, which may appear monotonous after certain period.

Salary and pay scale

As per the recent SSC CGL 2017 notification, this post is considered under the following pay scale.
  1. Pay scale – Rs. 9,300- 34, 800
  2. Grade pay—Rs. 4,200
Total pay= Initial pay + grade pay;
Total pay = 9,300 + 4, 200 = Rs. 13, 500;

When you are deputed as Divisional Accountant in CAG, you will be entitled the following major allowances as well-
  1. Transport allowance
  2. House rent allowance
  3. Dearness allowance
  4. Petrol allowance
  5. Limited Mobile bill
Hence, the calculated salary taking the above points consideration, you will get around Rs. 38,000 per month in starting. This salary is not calculated under the 7thpay commission. Let us see what will be new in 7thpay commission for the central government officer.
Career growth and promotions

As a Divisional Accountant in CAG office, you are promoted on the following path-
  1. Divisional Account Officer- Grade II (GP- Rs. 4,600)
  2. Divisional Account Officer-Grade I (GP- Rs. 4,800 & Gazetted)
  3. Senior Divisional Accounts officer (GP- Rs. 5,400 & Gazetted)
Initial two years is probation period. After this, you have to clear the departmental exam, which is very decent and requires adequate knowledge of the concerned work and profile. This includes six subjective papers and you have three attempts to clear it. Seniority will be decided on the score of this exam exclusively. The departmental exam includes the following six papers.
  1. Book keeping and accountancy
  2. Public works accounts (practical)
  3. Public works accounts (Theory)
  4. General Hindi and English ( Essay, précis and letter writing)
  5. Essay in regional language
  6. Financial rules, service rules, treasury rules and fundamental rules
The passing marks in the above exam are 40% and exemption is 45%. Promotion is very lucrative as you can be promoted up to a class-I officer as there is no separate exam. You have to only qualify the departmental exam.

The cons with this aspect are that you are transferred in every 3 years and infrastructure is not good in the state offices as banks and central government offices do have.
